Cross, Edward Ephraim, 1832-1863
Edward Cross was educated at Lancaster schools and began his career as a newspaper printer for the Coos County Democrat. Cross worked at various newspapers across the country in the 1850s. In 1860/61 Cross served as a battalion commander in the Mexican Liberal army. Cross returned to New Hampshire in the fall of 1861 to accept a colonel's commission from Governor Nathaniel Berry and became commander of the 5th New Hampshire volunteers.Colonel Cross was wounded at Fair Oaks (June 1862), Antietam (September 1862), and Fredericksburg (December 1862) before losing his life at Gettysburg (July 1863).
Col. Henry O. Kent was born February 7th, 1834 in Lancaster, New Hampshire. He attended the common schools of Lancaster and then attended Norwich University in Vermont. During the Civil War he served as Assistant Adjutant General on the State militia with major responsibility for recruitment.
