The Department of African American Studies was officially established at Emory University in 2003. Predecessors of the Department included the Black Studies Program, 1971-1980; Afro-American and African Studies Program, 1980-1984; African American and African Studies Program, 1984-1992; and African American Studies Program, 1992-2003. Prominent faculty members included Dolores P. Aldrige, the program's first chairperson, and Rudolph P. Byrd.
