Hirst, Thomas Archer, 1830-1892
Articled 1846 to a land surveyor at Halifax and met John Tyndall (F. R. S. 1825) and followed him to Marburg and took Ph. D. degree there. In 1853 he succeeded Tyndall at Queenwood College, Hampshire but resigned in 1856 due to his health. Studied in Paris and in 1860 was appointed Mathematical master at University College School, London. F. R. S. 1861. Royal Medal 1883. F. R. A. S. 1866. Professor of Physics, University College, London 1865 and Professor of Pure Mathematics at University College 1866-1870. Director of Naval Studies, Greenwich 1873-1883.
