Splawn, Walter M. W. (Walter Marshall William), 1883-....

Walter Marshall William Splawn (1883-1963) was an economist, professor, University of Texas presidetn and head of the Interstate Commerce Commission. He was born in Arlington, Texas, on June 16, 1883, and educated at Baylor University (BA, 1906; LLD, 1925), Yale University (MA 1914) and the University of Chicago (PhD, 1921). He taught social science and economics, and practiced law, as well as participating in state and national politics. Splawn was prominent in New Deal policy development, and was close friends with Speaker of the House Sam Rayburn. He also authored several works related to interstate commerce. Walter Splawn died on January 17, 1963.
