Arthur Jaffe's fascination with book arts began with an interest in the graphicness of the ancient Hebrew "aleph bet," which led to an interest in collecting expressionist woodcuts. Arthur then discovered the woodcuts of Xylographia or "block-books," which were the precursor of the book printed with movable type. Each page was printed from a single block of wood which contained the picture and a caption.

These early interests led Arthur Jaffe and his wife, Mata, to begin collecting book arts materials, which have evolved into to present day Jaffe Collection.
