Toledo Turners.

Toledo branch of society devoted to German culture.

The Toledo School Turners Chapter began in 1858, following the establishment of numerous such groups begun by new German immigrants in 1848 onwards, particularly in Pennsylvania, New York, and the midwest. Its earlier counterparts had carried out an aggressive program of German culture, promoting the German language, gymnastics, the military, and political stances. But like other chapters following the Civil War, the Toledo group focused on athletics. Toledo's club name, affiliation, and location changed many times through the years. The group is still active, with a continued emphasis on sports and other group activities.
