Crompton & Knowles Corporation

Crompton & Knowles Loom Works established 1897 by consolidation of Crompton Loom Works (established 1851 by William Crompton) and Knowles Loom Works (established 1855 by Lucius J. Knowles); manufacturers of looms and textile machinery; headquartered in Worcester, Mass., but manufacturing facilities also in Providence, R.I., Philadelphia, Pa., and Charlotte, N.C.; because of expansion and diversification, name of company changed in 1956 to Crompton & Knowles Corporation; loom works in Worcester closed in 1981.
