Hoag, Enoch, 1812-1884

Enoch Hoag, a member of Iowa Yearly Meeting, was appointed Superintendent of the Central Superintendency (Kansas and Indian Territory) in 1869 under President Grant's "Peace Policy." This gave supervision of the Indians in this area to the Orthodox branch of the Society of Friends. Serving under Hoag were Indian Agents (also Friends), assigned to agencies representing the Kickapoo, Shawnee, Potawatomi, Kansas, Osage, Quapaw, Sac and Fox, Cheyenne, Arapaho, Wichita, Kiowa, Comanche and Apache. Hoag's duties included the establishment of Indian schools, the distribution of supplies and payment of annuities to the Indians. Hoag resigned his position in 1876 and Friends withdrew from government sponsored work in 1879.
