Boutelle, Frazier Augustus.

Frazier was an army officer who began his career in the 5th New York Cavalry during the Civil War, achieving the rank of lieutenant. He later rejoined the Army and became captain in the 1st Cavalry. His letters, most of them to or from his wife, describe Army life in various frontier posts in Oregon, Texas, Montana, and California. He saw action in the Modoc War, was superintendent of Yellowstone National Park, 1889-1890, and after his retirement in 1895 became adjutant general of the state of Washington. His son, Harry Moss Boutelle, attended Hill Military Academy in Portland, Oregon in 1890 and Stanford University, 1891-1892. Young Boutelle was appointed lieutenant in the 3rd Artillery in 1898, and was killed in action November 2, 1899 near Aliago, Philippine Islands. His letters, 1890-1898, to and from his parents, form a major part of the collection.
