Porter, Jacob, 1783-1846
Jacob Porter (1783-1846), son of Seth and Mary Cobb Porter, was born in Abington, Mass., and graduated from Yale in 1803. He spent his life in Plainfield, Mass., where he was a physician. However, he devoted primary attention to botany, mineralogy and literature. He married Betsy Mayhew (d. 1813) in 1813 and Sally Reed in 1819. He was a member of the Lyceum of Natural History of New York, the Massachusetts Society for Promoting Agriculture, the American Antiquarian Society (elected 1822), and the American Geological Society.
