The University of Oregon Medical School was established in Portland, Oregon, on June 16, 1887, to provide medical education and patient care services. In 1909 the Willamette University Medical Department was absorbed by the University of Oregon Medical School, which then became the only medical school north of San Francisco and west of Denver. In 1919 the school moved from Northwest Portland to its present location on Marquam Hill in Southwest Portland. In 1974, under the direction of the Oregon State System of Higher Education, the University of Oregon Health Sciences Center was formed, incorporating the schools of Dentistry, Nursing, and Medicine. In 1981, by an act of the Oregon Legislature, the institution was renamed Oregon Health Sciences University (OHSU).
