Born July 13, 1891 in Mount Vernon, MO. Graduated from University of Missouri, Columbia in 1916. Began teaching career at Peabody College in 1920. Received master's degree (1934) and doctorate (1935) from Columbia University. Principal of Central High School, 1923-1945. Associate Superintendent of Charlotte City Schools, 1945-1949. Superintendent, 1949-1960. First superintendent of consolidated Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools, 1960-1962. After retiring in 1962, served as a representative for Mecklenburg County in the NC General Assembly, 1963-1965. Died, August 21, 1982, in Charlotte, N.C.
