Byrd, Harry Clifton, 1889-1970
Harry Byrd was president of the University of Maryland from 1935 to 1954.
He also served the university as an instructor in history and English and as its football coach. Byrd also maintained an active interest in environmental affairs, chairing the Tidewater Fisheries Commission and aiding the revitalization of the Potomac River and Chesapeake Bay.
