Gabriel, Chas. H. (Charles Hutchinson), 1856-1932

Charles Gabriel was born in Cedar County, Iowa, lived in Chicago from 1892 to 1925, and spent his last years in California. He wrote thousands of gospel songs as well as several books dealing with church music and composition. He was the composer of many of the songs made popular by revivalist Billy Sunday. At one point he was the editor of a monthly journal called the Gospel Choir published by the Rodeheaver Company. Charles was one of 8 children born to Isaac Newton and Cleopatra Cotton Gabriel. Other related family names in the scrapbook include Hill, Hedges, Harris, Rich, Kay, and Dunkle. Family members resided in Cedar Rapids, Wilton, and Cedar County, Iowa.
