Joan Fabrics Corp.

The company was incorporated in 1932 in Central Falls, R.I., and manufactured plush fabrics, upholstery materials, and corduroys, purchasing the cotton and mohair yarns. David Ansin was president and E. Ansin served as treasurer; in 1934, E. Herzog entered the firm as buyer and agent, eventually becoming vice president. By 1953, the company was run by H.S. Ansin. The company moved to Woonsocket, R.I., in 1936 and acquired a plant in Lowell, Mass., in 1957. It later acquired a plant in North Carolina. In the 1960s, the company was located in Lowell, Mass. in the former Massachusetts Mohair Plush Co. building on Western Ave. In the 1960's, the Woonsocket plant was closed. Joan Fabrics Corp., headquartered in Tyngsboro, Mass., filed for bankruptcy in 2007, although its North Carolina plant was unaffected. It currently produces products for office furniture and wall coverings used in hotels, businesses, and hospitals in the Canadian, Mexican and U.S. markets.
