Spence, Joseph, 1699-1768
Joseph Spence (1699-1768), anecdotist and professor of poetry in New College, Oxford, is best known for his Essay on Pope's Odyssey (1727) and his Anecdotes, Observations and Characters of Books and Men (1820), published posthumously.
