West, Calvin Brookings, 1816-1855.
Calvin Brookings West settled in Defiance, Ohio (1843) with his wife, Elizabeth Ludlow Hudson West. His many letters to relatives describe family life in Ohio (1844-1852). In 1853 West travelled alone to Oregon. He kept a journal of his experiences and sent regular letters to family members about life on trail and in Umpqua River Valley, Oregon (1853). When West's wife became ill, he returned to Ohio (1854). After her recovery, they took ship for Oregon, but West died of cholera before they reached San Francisco (1855). Reginald Ray Stuart met descendants of West and transcribed materials in collection from originals preparatory to writing his biography (1961).
