GWEN Project (U.S.)
Began in mid 1980s; worked against GWEN (Ground Wave Emergency Network), a plan by the U.S. Air Force to build towers around the U.S. for use of communication in the event that other methods of communication were disabled; the GWEN Project was a national organization, headquartered in Amherst, Mass.; co-directors, Nancy Foster and Lois Barber; in 1994 the U.S. Congress refused further funding for GWEN, calling it wasteful and unnecessary.
