The Scripps Research Institute (TSRI) is one of the major medical research facilities in the U.S. The Institute began in La Jolla, Calif., in 1924 as the Scripps Metabolic Clinic after a founding gift from Ellen Browning Scripps. In 1955, the clinic changed its name to the Scripps Clinic and Research Foundation. Under the direction of Dr. Frank Dixon, the facility soon attained national prominence as a leading medical research and educational facility. In 1976, the Institute moved to its current location on the Torrey Pines mesa just north of UCSD. Today TSRI is a leading contributor to medical research in the areas of immunology, cardiology, pathology, dermatology, diabetes, neurology, pulmonary disease, and rheumatology.
