Scammon, Richard E., 1883-1952

Richard Everingham Scammon was born in Kansas City, Missouri on July 9, 1883. He earned his B.A. in 1904 from the University of Kansas, his M.A. in 1906 and Ph.D. in 1909 from Harvard University. Before joining the faculty at the University of Minnesota, Dr. Scammon was an instructor in zoology and anatomy at the University of Kansas (1906-1907, 1910-1913) and Harvard University (1907-1910). Dr. Scammon accepted a position as professor of anatomy at the University of Minnesota in 1914. In 1930, Dr. Scammon left Minnesota to accept the position as professor and dean of the division of biological sciences at the University of Chicago, but returned to Minnesota in 1931 to become the first dean of Medical Sciences. In 1949, Dr. Scammon retired from the University of Minnesota and he died on September 12, 1952.
