Bigelow, Howard E. (Howard Elson), 1923-
Howard E. Bigelow (1923-1987) was a mycologist. His expertise was in the Agaric mycota of New England. He taught at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, Mass., Dept. of Botany from 1957-1983. He is known for his monograph on the Clitocybe genus of the Tricholomataceae. He was born in Greenfield, Mass. He attended Oberlin College from 1941-1943, leaving to fight in WWII. He returned to Oberlin in 1946, receiving his B.A. in 1949 and his M.A. in 1951. A student of Alexander H. Smith, he received his Ph. D. from the University of Michigan in 1956.
