Louis Dreller was born in Portsmouth, New Hampshire on March 6, 1897. He graduated from the University of New Hampshire in June 1918, and was simultaneously commissioned an Ensign in the U.S. Navy for Engineering Duty Only. He received temporary promotion to Lieutenant Junior Grade during World War I, was commissioned in that rank as of July 1, 1920, and subsequently progressed through the grades to Rear Admiral to date from July 14, 1943. His transfer to the Retired List in that rank became effective July 1, 1951.
