Laboratoire de mécanique et d'acoustique (Centre national de la recherche scientifique, 1941-

Founded by François Canac (1886-1969) in 1941, the Laboratoire de méchanique et d'acoustique (LMA) is one of the oldest institutions within the CNRS which was created in 1939. This unit was created with resources from the Laboratory of the Center of Research of the National Navy in Toulon which had been active in the field of acoustics since 1920 and had just disappeared because of the international events. The laboratory successively carried the name of Center of Scientific, Industrial and Maritime Research (CRSIM) until 1963, then the name of Center of Physics Research (CRP) under the authority of Théodore Vogel (1903-1978) until 1972, and then it became the Laboratory of Mechanics and Acoustics (LMA), under the direction of Bernard Nayroles until 1985. After a transition period during which the responsibility of the laboratory rested jointly on Robert Bouc and Claude Gazanhes, its direction has been given to Claude Gazanhes since 1988.
