Scripps Institution of Oceanography. Ship Operations and Marine Technical Support.

While SIO has operated research vessels since its founding in 1903, it did not have a research fleet until 1948, when SIO Marine Facilities was established. The Nimitz Marine Facility at Point Loma in San Diego was dedicated in 1966 to provide berthing for the SIO fleet. In 1974, Marine Facilities and various separate technician groups were organized into Ship Operations and Marine Technical Support (SOMTS).
