Snoek, J. Diedrick

Jaap Diedrick Snoek, professor of psychology at Smith College from 1962-1994, was born in Eindhoven, The Netherlands in 1931. He studied at the University of Amsterdam from 1949-1950. After his family moved to the United States in 1950 he attended Western Reserve University (B.A., Psychology, 1954) and the University of Michigan (M.A., 1955; Ph. D., 1960). He was also a visiting professor at the Graduate School of Industrial Administration at the Carnegie Institute of Technology and at the University of Utrecht (1987-1988). He taught a wide range of courses, including introductory psychology, the psychology of adolescent, social psychology, attitudes and opinions and introductory statistics. He also developed courses on adult development and behavior in organizations. In addition to the teaching activities he maintained a private practice as a psychologist. He conducted human relations training and personal growth workshops with Pendle Hill, Powell House, the National Training Laboratories, the National Association for Pastoral Renewal, the Friends Conference on Religion and Psychology and others. He was a member of professional organizations: American Psychological Association, the Eastern Psychological Association, the Massachusetts Psychological Association, the Society for the Psychological Study of Social Issues, the Society for Values in Higher Education and the Society of the Simga Xi.
