Thurtell, John, 1794-1824
John Thurtell was hanged in 1824 for murdering William Weare at Elstree, Hertfordshire, 1823. His trial created much interest and was one of the last trials to be held under the Tudor procedure of examining the witnesses and prisoners separately before the trial.
