Howe, Arthur Jr.

Arthur Howe Jr. was born on July 19, 1921, in Watertown, Connecticut. He entered Yale University with the Class of 1943, obtaining a B.A. in 1947 after serving in the military during the Second World War. Howe held several administrative positions at Yale, including assistant dean of freshman (1951-1953), director of admissions (1953-1955), and dean of admissions and student appointments (1955-1964). Beginning in 1964, Howe spent many years as the president of the American Field Service. From 1955 to 1980, Howe also served on the Board of Trustees of Hampton Institute, which his grandfather, Samuel Chapman Armstrong, founded and on which his father, Arthur Howe Sr., served as president. Howe was chair of the Hampton Board of Trustees from 1957 to 1971.
