Schieffelin, Jacob, 1793-1880.
The Schieffelin Family represented in this collection spans four generations. Jacob Schieffelin, married to Hannah Lawrence, lived in New York City and ran a pharmecutical business. His son Jacob married Elizabeth Berard, and eventually moved to Tioga County, Pennsylvania, where he acted as a real estate agent and land developer. His son Clinton traveled and mined in the midwest and California, finally settling in Jackson County, Oregon. Clinton's brother Edward Girard stayed in Pennsylvania, serving with his state's militia in the Civil War. Clinton's son Edward L. Schieffelin discovered silver in Arizona and founded Tombstone. Edward's daughter Mary Schieffelin Brady collected material on her cousin and the founding of Tombstone and donated the papers to the Beinecke Library.
