Holliday, George H.

George H. Holliday joined the Union Army when he was 15, serving in the West Virginia Mounted Infantry until the end of the Civil War in 1865. Following the war, he reenlisted and his unit, the 6th West Virginia Veteran Cavalry, was sent to the Rocky Mountains to protect the frontier and guard stagecoach lines running over the mountains. His unit, chiefly based in Fort Laramie, served in the Dakotas, Wyoming, and Montana from 1865 to 1866. During the winter of 1865, Holliday became severely frostbitten and never fully recovered.
