Wilbraham & Monson Academy.
Monson Academy, incorporated 1804 in Monson, Mass., opening in 1806; in 1971 merged with Wilbraham Academy in the adjoining town, to become Wilbraham & Monson Academy, a residential co-educational preparatory school; first headmaster was Rev. Simeon Colton; first trustees included Rufus Flynt and Joel Norcross; after 1840s foreign students were admitted including Yung Wing, the first Asian to earn a college degree in the U.S., in 1854.
Under laws at the time of incorporation, a tract of land in Maine was granted to Monson Academy, later incorporated as the town of Monson, Maine, settled in part by residents of Monson, Mass., the sale of original land creating a funding base for the academy.
