Mann, Jacob

Jacob Mann was born in Brooklyn, New York in 1890. He graduated from Erasmus Hall High School and Columbia College. After obtaining his degree from Columbia in 1913, he taught Latin at the Boys High School. He left to serve in the Army Signal Corps during World War I and then returned to Boys High School. After the war, Mr. Mann taught at John Adams and Jamaica High Schools in Queens, and in 1935 returned to Boys High School as head of the Classics Department. In 1947, he was appointed as teacher in charge of the Boys High Annex. Jacob Mann was a former President of the Classical Club of New York, He was honored by the Alumni Association as "Teacher of Year" in 1960, and was guest of honor at the reunion dinners of the class of 1925 in 1960 and 1965. Upon his retirement he continued to keep in touch by mail with hundreds of his former students. Mr. Mann's first wife, the former Evelyn Weiss, predeceased him. They had two daughers, Joan Friedman of Roslyn, Long Island, and Constance M. Greiff of Princeton, New Jersey. His second wife, the former Ruth Cath, survived him. Jacob Mann died in August 1968 of a heart attack in Dover, New Jersey, while on vacation. He was 76 years old.
