Frewen, Thomas, 1704-1791
Thomas Frewen obtained his M.D. degree some time before 1755, and practised as a surgeon and apothecary at Rye in Sussex, and then as a physician at Lewes. He was one of the first people in the country to adopt the practice of inoculation with small-pox, which he described in his essay on The practice and theory of inoculation (London, 1749). He published a second essay on this subject in 1759. His other work was Physiologia (London, 1780), a treatise applying the doctrines of Boerhaave to diseases. Frewen died at Northiam in Sussex on 14 June 1791.
