Sigma Alpha Iota. Alpha Sigma Chapter (University of New Mexico)
On May 25, 1935, 21 women chartered the Alpha Sigma chapter of the Sigma Alpha Iota (SAI) music honorary society at the University of New Mexico. SAI is a national music fraternity for women. On January 10, 1939, the Albuquerque Alumnae chapter of SAI was founded and the groups bylaws adopted. The Alumnae Chapter was responsible for awarding scholarships to the student chapter of the honorary as well as being active in several philanthropies. The group sent teachers to the Cerebral Palsy Day School and the School of Hard of Hearing. The group also established the For All Manner of Entertainment, or FAME, fund, which paid to place talented musicians in jobs. The Alumnae Chapter also sponsored music radio programs. By the fall of 1982, when plans for the 50th anniversary of the honarary were underway, Alpha Sigma had initiated some 577 members. The music honorary continues to provide scholarships, fraternity, and prerformance opportunities to women in music.
