Moffatt, James Strong, 1808-1890.
J.S. Moffatt & Co. was a general merchandise store, with dealings also in tobacco, wheat and cotton. During the period of 6 years (1861-67) there are no records due to the fact that Mr. Moffatt was aiding the Confederate cause by supplying troops from Troy with guns, clothes and food. The town of Troy was founded about 1835 and the firm of Jas. S. Moffatt was begun about 1840. It took over much of the business of the original large firm of Polk, Crockett & Co.
