Tucker, William J.

William J. Tucker, soldier, newspaper editor, author, and conservationist, was born in Longview, Texas.

In 1929 he became the first Executive Secretary of the Texas Game, Fish, and Oyster Commission, the state's effort to regulate hunting and fishing and manage wildlife resources responsibly. From 1931 to 1932 Tucker served as the president of the Association of Fish and Wildlife Agencies, a quasi-official group of public agencies charged with the protection and management of North America's fish and wildlife resources. Additionally, he edited the Taylor, Texas, "Daily Press" newspaper and served as a Corporal in the Army Air Force during World War II.
