Mullen, Bernard F., 1825-1879.

Bernard F. Mullen was born on 4 March 1825 in Manayunk, Pennsylvania. He moved to Ripley County, Indiana as a youth and enrolled in the Versailles Medical Seminary. He became a surgeon and practiced medicine in Madison and Napoleon, Indiana. He was married to Mary F. Mancourt and they had five children. A member of the Ripley County State Militia he helped organize a regiment that became the 35th Indiana, 1st Irish Regiment. Promoted to colonel, he saw action in Kentucky and Tennessee but due to ill health resigned from his regiment in 1864. At home he continued to practice medicine until he died of consumption in 1879. Hugh D. Gallagher of Osgood, Indiana, the nephew of Bernard F. Mullen mustered into "I" Company, of the 13th Indiana Infantry as a 1st sergeant. He was captured and released, and eventually was promoted to lieutenant colonel in Februrary of 1865. He mustered out on 30 September 1865.
