Gilmore was born on July 5, 1935 in Los Angeles; became a child actor in Hollywood during the 1940s; attended New York University; BA, Antioch College, 1955; later became a leading man, acting in film, television, and on the New York stage; instructor in creative writing at Antioch College/West and Glendora College, 1974-76; won New York Circle Award for Poetry, 1967, and Southwest Literary Award in 1976 for his novel, Blowout; other publications include Overpass blues (1967), The Tucson murders (1970), The garbage people (1971), The real James Dean (1975), and Night shark (1975).
