Gleason, Henry A. (Henry Allan), 1882-1975
Henry A. (Henry Allan) Gleason (1882-1975) was a taxonomist, ecologist and administrator at the New York Botanical Garden (NYBG). His specialty was Melastomataceae. During his career at the NYBG he served as Curator, Head Curator and Assistant Director. He was Acting Director from 1936-1938. Gleason was responsible for developing the South American Collections at the Garden. He was one of the founders of the American Society of Plant Taxonomists. A prolific writer, he was variously editor of the Garden Journal, Addisonia and the NYBG Bulletin. He graduated from the University of Illinois and received his Ph.D. from Columbia University, studying under N.L. Britton. He died in Canada in 1975.
