Battey, William

William Battey (1782-1849), son of Joseph and Amey (West) Battey, was born on 5 July 1782 in Warwick, R.I. In 1801 he married Sarah Harris of Scituate, R.I., and they had one daughter, Cifuentes, born the following year.

Battey worked in his distilling and shipping business, and served in the local militia. At the start of the War of 1812, Battey was commissioned a captain of the 25th Infantry, USA. Battey's regiment was sent to the Fort George area, where they fought the British and experienced some casualties. Battey was promoted to major and then to colonel, but he resigned from the army on 13 December 1813. After the war he continued to serve in the militia, and was appointed his regiment's major general in 1818. William Battey died on 23 September 1849, and was buried in Hills Grove Cemetery.
