Dodd, Thomas J., 1837-1899

Thomas J. Dodd was born Aug. 4, 1837, in Harper's Ferry, Va., and died Feb. 9, 1899. He joined the Kentucky Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, in 1860. He was a professor in the Vanderbilt University Biblical Dept. (later the School of Religion, now the Divinity School) from 1877 to 1885. Skilled in Latin, Greek, Hebrew, Chaldee, Syriac and other languages, he was considered one of the foremost linguists in the South. He was granted an honorary doctorate in divinity by Centre College. In addition to publishing two books, he was a frequent contributor of articles to Methodist journals.
