Loyola University of Chicago. Athletics Dept.
The department of Physical Education at Loyola University Chicago was established in 1923. The name changed to the Athletics department in 1925. From 1925 to 1936 the Athletics department operated under the supervision of the Faculty Governing Board for Athletics, which was responsible for policies, awards, hirings, and scheduling. The department was overseen by the director of athletics. In 1937, the board was changed to the Committee on Athletics and in 1950 the University Athletic Board was created. The Athletics department was originally responsible for both intercollegiate and informal sporting activities. In 1987 departmental responsibilities were separated creating the department of recreation sports to handle informal, intramural, and club activities, and the department of athletics to handle intercollegiate athletics. In 1996 the department of athletics was renamed the department of intercollegiate athletics. Currently both departments are part of the division of Student Affairs.
