Miss Mary E. Branch was the first woman president of Tillotson College, Austin, Texas, as a coeducational institution of higher learning.

Tazewell Branch, a two term member of the Virginia Legislature, had been a slave during Reconstruction. 1895 1897 Attended Virginia State College 1904 1925 Member of faculty at Virginia State College 1922 Received M.A. from the University of Chicago, Illinois 1926 Received Ph.D. from the University of Chicago, Illinois 1925 1926 Taught English, Sumner Jr. College, Kansas City, Kansas 1926 1930 Dean of Women, Vashon High School, St. Louis, Missouri 1930, July 1 Appointed president of Tillotson College, Austin, Texas, by the American Missionary Association 1935 Received honorary LL.D., Howard University 1944, July 6 Died in Camden, New Jersey
