Ballantine, W. G. (William Gay), 1848-1937
William Gay Ballantine was born in 1848 and received his B.A. from Marietta College in 1868. In 1872, he graduated from Union Theological Seminary and entered upon post-graduate studies at the University of Leipzig. He served with the American Palestine Expedition in 1873. Before joining the Oberlin theological faculty in 1878, he taught at Ripon College and the University of Indiana. He was unanimously elected fourth President of Oberlin College in 1891 but resigned after five years and accepted the appointment of Professor of Bible at the Y.M.C.A. School in Springfield, Massachusetts. He retired in 1921 and died in 1937.
