International Penal and Penitentiary Commission.
The International Penal and Penitentiary Commission was formed in 1872 as the International Penal Commission. In 1929 it acquired its present name. In 1926 its Permanent Office was established in Berne, Switzerland. The International Penal and Penitentiary Commission's purpose was to advise governments on the reform of criminals, the prevention of crime, and prison administration. It did not operate between the years 1939-1945, was revived in 1946, and in 1950 it was absorbed into the Dept. of Social and Economic Affairs of the Secretariat of the United Nations. At one time the office was also called the International Penal and Prison Commission.
