Brown, Alan S., 1922 or 1923-2006
Alan S. Brown, son of Gordon S. and Hazel L. Brown, was born April 23, 1922 in Detroit, Michigan. He died May 18, 2006 in Kalamazoo, Michigan. Brown received his Ph.D. in 1953 from the University of Michigan. He taught at the University of Michigan and Kent State University before coming to Western Michigan University's Department of History in 1955. Brown was WMU's first archivist and also served as Dean at Kanley Chapel. He received the WMU Alumni Teaching Excellence Award in 1989. Brown retired in 1991 as Professor of History Emeritus. He was a frequent contributor to Michigan History Magazine.
