United States. Army. Massachusetts Infantry Resgiment, 57th(1864-1865)
The 57th Regiment, organized by Colonel William F. Bartlett in Worcester, participated in several Virginia battles including: the Battle of the Wilderness, Cold Harbor, Petersburg, Battle of the Crater, Weldon Railroad, and Fort Stedman. The 54th Regiment, organized by Colonel Robert Gould Shaw, the first African American troop in the Massachusetts militia, participated in the battles of James Island, Morris Island and Fort Wagner, and Boykin's Mills. George E. Priest, of Watertown, Massachusetts, was 1st lieutenant and regimental quartermaster for the 57th Regiment encamped at Readville.
