IUPUI (Campus). Office of External Affairs

Prior to the establishment of IUPUI, public relations for Indiana University activities in Indianapolis fell to the News Bureau, which focused much of its attention on the IU School of Medicine and the IU Medical Center. With the development of Indiana University-Indianapolis in the 1960s, with several schools scattered throughout downtown Indianapolis, an Assistant Director of University Relations supervised internal and external relations. After creation of IUPUI, in 1972 administrators created an Office of Information Services. In 1977 the name changed to the Office of University Relations, with a director supervising the News Bureau and a Publications Office. In 1988 IUPUI created the position Vice Chancellor for External Affairs to supervise media and community relations, publications, the IUPUI alumni office, the Indiana University Foundation operation in Indianapolis, the Continuing Studies program, and intercollegiate athletics.
