Blackmer, George M.

George M. Blackmer was a physician in Buffalo, New York. In 1909, he began building a home at 111 Penhurst Park. The house was designed by the architectural firm of Green and Wicks (Edward B. Green and William Sydney Wicks). In 2002, the house was the residence of the person who was the mayor of Buffalo. In 1909, Penhurst Park was a new development, just south of Delaware Park and near the Albright Art Gallery (another building designed by the Green and Wicks firm). The houses in the development had to cost at least $10,000.

Edward B. Green (1855-1950) graduated from Cornell University in 1878 with a degree in architecture. William Sydney Wicks (1854-1919) graduated from MIT in 1881 and formed a partnership with Green in Auburn, New York; they moved to Buffalo two years later. They designed many commercial buildings and private residences, mostly in Buffalo, but in other cities as well. Wicks retired in 1917, and Green took his son into partnership with him. The son died in 1933 and the elder Green entered into partnership with R. Maxwell James; later Rufus W. Meadows joined the firm. Green retired in 1945 and died in 1950. For the last fifteen years that he worked, Green's main commission was to develop a master plan and design buildings for the University of Buffalo (now the State University of New York at Buffalo).
