Hambleton, James P. (James Pinkney), 1830-1897

James Pinkney Hambleton, newspaper editor, physician, and politician, was born ca. 1830, in Pittsylvania County, Virginia, and died in 1897, in Washington, D.C.

He moved to Atlanta, Georgia, in the mid or late 1850's, and became the first editor of the newspaper, SOUTHERN CONFEDERACY, in 1859. During the Civil War he was a surgeon with the 4th Battalion, Georgia Infantry. He transferred to the 35th Regiment, Georgia Infantry, but resigned in December 1862. After the war, he moved to Washington, D.C., was chosen clerk of the House Committee on Ways and Means (1876), but resigned due to controversy.
