The Japan Mission of the Evangelical Lutheran Church (ELC), which had worked in Japan since 1949 and which had organizational ties to the Lutheran Free Church and the Japan Evangelical Lutheran Church, was joined by the United Evangelical Lutheran Church in Japan mission in 1960 to become the Japan mission of The American Lutheran Church. In 1960 the Tokai Evangelical Lutheran Church was organized as a result of the ELC mission activity.
